This rose is mis-named, for it has many more than just two delights. Between its award-winning fragrance, its huge flower size, its changing colors, and its superior heat tolerance, Double Delight is an embarrassment of riches. And now you can have it grafted atop a straight, vigorous 3-foot standard to plant in your best containers and garden spots.
Winner of an All-America Rose Selection award the moment it was introduced, Double Delight has also taken the Gamble Medal for fragrance. And that is the first pleasure you will find in this shrub: a powerful, heavenly scent combining spicy clove-like elements with pure old-fashioned tea rose sweetness. You’ll want to snip a few of these blooms for the vase, but be warned: it just takes one to deliciously scent the whole house.
Next, the flower size may astound you. Double Delight is a hybrid tea, packed with whorls of petals that unfold slowly from high centers. As they open, they are pure white. But after a few days in the sun, they begin to acquire red edges, for all the world as though they were being outlined in dark red paint. A magnificent effect, particularly on a fully blooming shrub, when some flowers are still creamy white while others are in transition and still others fully bicolored.
These blooms reach 5 to 6 inches wide, and last a long time on the plant or in the vase. They appear most heavily early in the season, but continue intermittently all summer, because Double Delight is also blessed with superb heat tolerance. When the weather gets really steamy, many roses pack it in for the season, but not this one.
Double Delight has been a shrub favorite for years, but we are delighted to expand its range this season by offering it as a standard- or tree-form rose. Using our special rootstock known as Dr. Huey, we graft 3-4 Double Delight bud grafts onto the top of a straight trunk. This creates a rounded “tree” of fresh healthy foliage and long-stemmed, simply enormous blooms.
Standard-form roses are ideal for containers, but we think they also make superb punctuation plants in accent plantings and borders. They are quite winter-hardy, needing only a little extra protection at the graft site during the harshest conditions. Double Delight will grow and thrive for many years in the garden as well as on your patio, deck, or porch.
This multiple award winner is not to be missed. Such an unusual color changing process, such large blooms, such unforgettable fragrance — Double Delight has it all.
