Heuchera Forever Red is an evergreen (in warm climates) perennial offering 3 seasons to year-round interest, blooming late summer to fall. Grown mainly for its stunning, intensely colored foliage, Heuchera Forever Red’s lobed and lightly ruffled leaves are glossy and bright red to burgundy, with the deepest red hues occurring in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. The showy sprays of tiny pink buds are borne on long, thin red stems and open to dainty white blossoms that appear to float above the foliage. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and last a long time in floral arrangements.
A Heuchera hybrid, commonly called heuchera, coral bells, or alumroot, Forever Red, an herbaceous plant, has a low, mounding habit and a vigorous growth rate, with mature clumps reaching up to 8 inches tall and spreading 14 inches wide. Forever Red is a versatile plant, shown to best effect massed or grouped in the garden or containers. It is also an excellent edging plant for paths or walkways.
Cold hardy and easy to grow, heuchera is virtually carefree. It grows best in a sunny to partially shady location with organically rich, humusy, medium moist, well-draining soil. Although heuchera is somewhat drought tolerant once established, foliage declines in overly dry soil. Consistent moisture is recommended for this shallow-rooted plant, especially if grown in hot climates, where afternoon shade may also be beneficial. Although the plant is low maintenance, mulching in late fall helps to moderate soil temperature and prevent heaving, and deadheading faded flowers promotes additional blooms. Remove dead leaves in spring.
