Far and away the most colorful Brunnera yet, ‘Sea Heart’ is a changing delight in the partly to fully shaded border or container. The Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’ blooms open white and blue, gradually maturing to lavender-purple. When in full flower, all 3 colors are present at once, creating a seldom-seen flush of bright color for the shade!
This Heartleaf Brunnera begins spring with fresh leaves of olive green overlaid with a bright silvery tracery, intricate and very beautiful. Many-layered and dense, the Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’ perennial has a much larger impact than you would expect from its size, thanks to the detailing on every leaf.
By mid-spring, the flowers are opening all over ‘Sea Heart’, facing straight up on slender stems carried above the foliage. They complement the silvery-green leaves perfectly, and keep arising through late spring. Expect them to begin earlier than other Brunnera varieties, and to last just as long — giving you another week or two of beauty in the shade!
Unlike many older varieties, the variegation on the foliage remains true even through summer’s heat. The lovely venation pattern persists into fall, adding another season of beauty to ‘Sea Heart’.
The Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’ reaches just 6 to 12 inches high and spreads 1 to 2 feet wide. It’s lovely in the front of the shade border, along pathways, and in containers, where its delicate, intricate variegation can be enjoyed up close. Very tolerant of summer heat and humidity, it requires little maintenance beyond enriched, well-drained, moist soil. Highly recommended. Zones 4-8.
