The exceptional red member of the Big Bang series’ development of the coreopsis family, ‘Mercury Rising’ features bold color and cold tolerance with vigorous growth. It also brought a new habit into the family.
Coreopsis Big Bang ‘Mercury Rising’ broke new ground by spreading, effectively intertwining with its neighbors in the border. Only 15 to 18 inches high in bloom, it spreads 2 to 3 feet wide, with fresh green foliage serving as the backdrop for the flowers.
The remarkable flowers begin about 1½ inches wide and grow as they mature. Arising throughout the summer in attention-grabbing magenta-claret, the blooms include a small, frilly center is frilly of bold golden-yellow, standing out splendidly among the dark, rich petals. Prepare to be amazed at the quality and volume of the blooms throughout the lengthy season.
With fall approaching, the flowers may continue with frosty white and cream streaks finding their way into the dark red, contributing a new look to the display as colors change around them.
