Capturing all the hues of the setting sun, Malibu is one of the most sensational hybrid teas available today. Giant 5-inch blooms slowly open from pointed, ovoid buds to reveal 30 to 35 petals painted with a blend of pink, cream, coral, and gold (with a lovely cream reverse.) Plus, the high-centered blossoms release a subtle but very pleasing scent redolent of cinnamon and cloves. From early summer to late summer, these exhibition-quality blooms arise profusely on 16- to 24-inch stems, adorning the vigorous, perpetually flowering shrubs, for a display that is simply dazzling in the sunny garden. And, of course, with their great substance and keeping quality, you’ll want to snip a few throughout the season to enjoy in vases in your home.
Bred by Dr. Keith Zary and introduced in 2009, Malibu deserves a place of honor in your garden, for not only are its flowers simply stunning, but the disease-resistant plant itself is a pure pleasure. It offers an upright habit of glossy, dark green foliage. There really is nothing not to love about this rose, and here at Jackson & Perkins, it has become a favorite.
Remove spent blooms to encourage more to arise. Prune in spring by removing old or dead wood and any canes that cross. If you live in a warmer climate, cut back the rest of the canes by about one-third; a bit more in colder areas.
