Spiraea Double Play Doozie is a deciduous perennial shrub offering three seasons of interest, blooming spring through fall, typically until the first frost. Truly unique and highly popular, Double Play Doozie is the first-ever reblooming spirea, blooming on old and new wood. Borne in cone-shaped clusters, the deep red flowers are larger than other spirea. They have a slight, sweet fragrance and attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden.
A classic landscape plant, spirea, also known as meadowsweet, is an all-around tough bush. Although Double Play Doozie has the typical neat, mounded habit of spirea, it also has compact, dense branching; super-showy bright red new growth; and amazing fall color. It is a lovely specimen plant for beds; a great filler for a thriller-filler-spiller container garden; and an excellent choice for edging and borders.
Spiraea Double Play Doozie is a triploid plant. Typical of triploid plants, it is vigorous, seedless, and sterile. Its flowers are larger, more colorful, and have a longer shelf life than those of their diploid counterparts. It also requires little or no deadheading.
Easy to grow, low maintenance, and cold hardy, Spiraea Double Play Doozie prefers full to part sun and average medium moisture, well-drained soils; but it tolerates a wide range of soils, light shade, and drought. The plant is also deer resistant.
