Styrax APrystine Spire is a small flowering deciduous tree offering 3 seasons of interest, grown for its pendant-shaped form of lustrous dark green foliage and its heavy flowering and fruiting. Extremely floriferous, this tree puts on a spectacular show in spring and early summer with dripping clusters of beautiful bell-shaped white flowers. Fragrant and nectar-rich, the flowers are a good food source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
A Styrax japonicus species, commonly called Japanese snowbell, APrystine Spire has a narrow, upright habit that is very different than most varieties of Japanese snowbell, which typically have a broad canopy of horizontal branching. APrystine Spire grows at a medium rate and reaches a mature size of 15 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Its attractive, medium-fine textured, grey-brown bark is smooth in youth but becomes beautifully fissured as it matures. This tree makes a great specimen, especially in confined spaces, but also makes a nice accent in mixed beds.
Japanese snowbell grows best in sunny locations with organic, moist, well-draining soil having an acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
