Tricyrtis ‘Gilt Edge’, a shade- and moisture-loving toad lily, provides flowers for weeks during the dull late summer to early fall season when the garden is at one of those awkward “in between” stages.
More flamboyant than most formosans, with long, elegant leaves 4 or 5 inches long and jaggedly edged in a creamy yellow that varies leaf by leaf, Tricyrtis ‘Gilt Edge’ is vigorous. The summer blooms, only an inch across, stand out brilliantly, their deep pink petals spotted in deep purple. The blooms continue for several weeks, filling your color gap until fall.
Plant Tricyrtis ‘Gilt Edge’ in moist soil 2 feet apart in the shade garden. Give it more sun in cooler climates. A good companion to ferns and hostas, it reaches 20 to 24 inches in height and up to 2½ feet in width. Hardy in Zones 4-8.
