Just 2 feet tall and 1 ½ feet wide at full maturity, Vaccinium ‘Tophat’ Blueberry bears masses of pea-shaped berries in early and midsummer. Unlike many blueberries, the white blooms that precede the fruit are quite ornamental—and, at ½-inch across, comparatively huge on the tiny plant.
The berries are sky-blue and delectable, and the light green foliage remains fresh over a very long season. Vaccinium ‘Tophat’ Blueberry is the perfect container plant for the sunny patio, it is also a distinctive choice for the front of the border or even as bonsai.
Supremely heat-tolerant, Vaccinium ‘Tophat’ Blueberry is a cross of a Highbush (Vaccinium corymbosum) and a Lowbush (V. angustifolium). This is the blueberry to plant where others have melted out in the heat—yet it is hardy all the way through Zone 3. Delightful in big pots on the patio, Vaccinium ‘Tophat’ Blueberry is a miniature garden joy.
Plant in full sun to light shade in acidic, well-drained soil. Vaccinium ‘Tophat’ Blueberry is self-fertile, but bigger crops arise if more than one is planted in the same area.
